There will be a family fishing program May 26 at Watt's Bay, North Shore, at Moraine State Park.

May 26, 1 to 3 p.m. Watt's Bay, North Shore, Moraine State Park 225 Pleasant Valley Road

Adults and children together will learn basic fishing skills like knot tying, casting, baiting the hook and taking a fish off the hook. Participants will have the opportunity to fish without a fishing license required. Equipment will be provided by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. June 6, 10 a.m. to noon Owlet Gift Shop at McDanels Boat Launch, North Shore, Moraine State Park, 225 Pleasant Valley Road

Participants will join guest artists and Moraine Preservation Fund volunteers for a two-hour watercolor workshop, on the first and third Wednesdays of the summer months. Adults of all skill levels are welcome. There is a $2 donation per person. Reservations are required; call 724-368-9185.

[naviga:h3]Glacier Ridge Trail Hike[/naviga:h3]

June 8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Route 528 Boat Launch, Moraine State Park, 225 Pleasant Valley Road

Participants will celebrate Pennsylvania Hiking Week on a 2.5-mile hike at Moraine. Sturdy shoes or boots, water and a snack for the trail are recommended. No registration is required.

[naviga:h3]Muddy Creek Oil Well Exhibit,/h3>

June 9, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Moraine State Park, 195 Park Road, Prospect

Visitors can see a restored oil well in operation. The Muddy Creek Oil Well is the restoration site of an antique oil well. The Bessemer Gas Engine and Marshall-Barr No. 19 oil well equipment is restored and open for visitors to hear and see the industry that powered this region on the second Saturday of each month.

June 17, 9 a.m. to noon Pavilion No. 6 McDanels Boat Launch, North Shore Moraine State Park 225 Pleasant Valley Road

This is an entry-level American Canoe Association kayaking course. The topics covered will include paddling environment, equipment, regulations, loading and unloading, strokes, maneuvers, wet exits and rescue techniques. Participants should possess basic swim skills. The course is open to adults and children, age 12 and older. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Kayaks and equipment will be provided. Registration is required; call 724-368-8811.

EXPERIENCING YOUR ENVIRONMENT THROUGH CONSERVATION

June 18 through 21, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jennings Environmental Education Center 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township

EYE Con is a summer science experience for students entering grades nine through 12 as well as graduating seniors. Students will design their own investigations, work one-on-one with professional ecologists and biologists, carry out scientific research, and present their findings. There is a $100 fee to apply. DISCOVER-E Day Camp Outdoor Explorers

June 27 and 29, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Kildoo Picnic Area, McConnells Mill State Park, 2716 McConnells Mill Road, Portersville

Children, age 6 to 8, with an adults, are invited to the park for hands-on activities, a story and a walk, all about rocks. Participants should take a packed lunch and wear sturdy shoes. The cost is $10 for both sessions. Reservations are required; call 724-368-8811.

Penns Adventurers day camp will be held on three Fridays this summer, July 6, 13 and 20. Children, age 9 to 12, are invited to become Penns Adventurers and learn outdoor skills. July 6 will feature backpacking and camping basics, 5 Points trail hike, tent pitching race and fire making. The cost for the program is $15. Registration is required; call 724-368-8811.

The Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will provide a free, guided tour of the sky. Attendees should take a chair. The rain date is July 14. Participants are encouraged to take their own telescopes.

Participants will join Moraine's park naturalist to search for salamanders and other critters in their habitat. Participants should pack sturdy hiking shoes and water shoes to slip on at the stream. No registration is required.

July 14, 8:30 to 10 p.m. Jennings Environmental Education Center 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township

Attendees will join Jeffrey Calta, vice president and member of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival, for a short talk and guided walk exploring the fireflies of Pennsylvania. This program is free.

Participants will join the park naturalist to explore Hell Run and do some crayfishing. Shoes that can get wet are recommended. This program is free.
