Monday — Justin D. Boes, 24, of Center Township was arraigned on felony and misdemeanor drug possession charge in connection with a traffic stop last month in Butler.

The defendant was stopped on South Monroe Street about 9 p.m. March 23, according to court documents, after a registration check showed the insurance on his vehicle was canceled.

Police said the smell of marijuana led them to search his sport utility vehicle. The search turned up 38 grams of suspected marijuana, documents said, as well as a scale and other drug contraband.

Boes was arraigned on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and driving a vehicle without insurance. He was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.

Monday — Nathan C. Barnhart, 21, of Donegal Township was charged with being more than twice the state’s legal limit for alcohol stemming from a reported March crash in Fairview Township.

Police said they got the call about 2:30 a.m. March 7 on Poplar Road. Barnhart told troopers that he was traveling on North Main Street in Chicora and lost control of his car on the snow, according to court documents, striking the porch of the State Farm insurance building.

He did not believe that there was damage enough to stop and continued onto Poplar Road where he realized he had a flat tire. He admitted that he had “a couple beers,” documents said.

Barnhart failed field sobriety tests and he also tested positive for alcohol on a portable breath test device. Police said they noticed an open bottle of vodka and multiple empty beer cans in the car.

Police took the defendant to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township for a blood test, which showed his blood alcohol level was 0.176 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

In addition to driving under the influence, Barnhart is charged with hit-and-run, failing to immediately notify police of an accident, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and reckless driving,

9:30 p.m. May 2 — Douglas E. Thompson, 63, of Butler was arrested for drugged driving after police first spotted his car swerve abruptly on New Castle Road in Butler Township. He was eventually pulled over in Butler.

He showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing, according to court documents. Police searched him and found a silver container with a suspected pill in it. He was taken for an evaluation by a drug recognition expert. The exam could not be completed, police said, because Thompson fell asleep.

The defendant was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology results were not included in charging documents.

Thompson was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving, reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt.
