Maridon series presents 'Mother's Recipe for Success'

Jewelry by Miriam Haskell, one of Zelda Wilbert's favorite designers, will be part of the program Tuesday at the Maridon Museum.

Zelda Wilbert's mother, who was also named Zelda, will be the primary subject of a program at the Maridon Museum just after Mother's Day this year.

“I called her Mimi. She kind of liked that,” Wilbert said.

The Butler resident will discuss “A Mother's Recipe for Success” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Maridon, 322 N. McKean St.

“It's going to be a tribute to my mother and the fact that when I was raised it was a kinder gentler era, when women dressed up to go shopping. They wore gloves. They wore jewelry. They wore stockings,” Wilbert said.

She will display vintage and collectible jewelry as part of The Collectors series hosted by the Maridon.

“I have some of my mother's, some I've collected, and some is from my childhood,” Wilbert said.

She also plans to display some items “that are linked to ladies finery,” she said.

These things include her mother's fountain pen, a little ink well, and some cigarette boxes and lighters that belonged to her mom. She will also display some of her mother's handkerchiefs and the Richard Hudnut sachet the pieces of cloth still smell like.“She came from the poor hills of Pisgah, W.Va., and she worked her way to become manager of various Hagan dairy stores in the '20s and '30s when a woman manager was unheard of,” Wilbert related. She also plans to discuss the history of costume jewelry. Her “Baubles, Bangles and Bling” program last May at the Maridon was full to capacity. “So many people wanted to come to the last one but were turned away so I'm going to do a program that's similar but with a little variation,” Wilbert said.Admission to the Tuesday program is free, but reservations are required because of limited space. Call the museum at 724-282-0123.

Zelda Wilbert, wearing half of an imperial jade belt buckle as a necklace, will talk about the piece she bought locally as well as jewelry that was her mother's as part of The Collectors series at the Maridon Museum. She also plans to display the Bakelite purse she has on her arm.
