Moniteau simply dominant

Moniteau pitcher Hunter Fitzingo tossed a three-inning no-hitter Monday afternoon in a 15-0 win over A-C Valley at Kelly Automotive Park. The Warriors are on quite a run during an 11-game winning streak.

There are winning streaks, then there is domination.

There is domination, then there is other-worldly.

Moniteau's varsity baseball team has risen into that third category this spring.

The Warriors' 15-0, three-inning victory over A-C Valley Monday at Kelly Automotive Park marked their 11th consecutive win. In only one of those games — Friday's 8-2 triumph over Keystone — did they have to play more than five innings.

“Those boys have been playing ball together for a while and they have a strong hunger to win,” Moniteau athletic director John Stoughton said. “They keep getting better because they are so dedicated.

“We have a batting cage set up in our auxiliary gym. Those guys are in there all the time.”

It shows.

Consider the following:

Moniteau has outscored its opponents 152-6 during its current winning streak.

The Warriors' team batting average is .399 and none of the starters are hitting below .330. The team's earned run average is 1.81.

Eight players on the team have collected 10 or more RBI. Seven players have scored 10 or more runs. The team's on-base percentage is .513.

Moniteau pitchers have struck out 108 and walked 35 in 65.2 innings pitched.

Monday's win came despite regular starters Wyatt Geibel, Nick and Nate Sosigian away on senior trips. They are hitting .412, .432 and .333, respectively.

“It doesn't matter,” A-C Valley coach John Irwin said. “That's a program over there. They've got 16 players who can all hit the baseball.

“That's as good a team as there is in District 9. We threw off-speed pitches at them, hoping to throw them off-balance so they would pop the ball up. They popped it up, alright ... deep into the gaps.”

The Falcons used four pitchers in the contest.

Dean Hershey, a freshman, stepped in and played shortstop for Moniteau Monday. He had a double, single and three RBI. The Warriors banged out 13 hits and the first three in their batting order — Hunter Fitzingo, Jake Jewart and Jared Lominski — went 6 for 7, reached base eight times and scored seven runs.

Lominski, the catcher, hit a pair of triples and knocked in three runs.

“I know that's pretty rare,” he said of a catcher getting two triples in a game. “I know I haven't done it before.”

Fitzingo threw a three-inning no-hitter, striking out six. His lone blemish was a leadoff walk to Broc Weigle in the third.

Fitzingo entered the game with a 4-1 record and 1.20 ERA. He has 43 strikeouts and only seven walks in 26.1 innings pitched.

“I don't mind sitting in the dugout waiting (while his team is scoring runs),” Fitzingo said. “That only motivates me more.”

Moniteau has eight on its roster who are at least third-year varsity players. Center fielder Jewart is one of them. He missed all of basketball season recovering from as torn ACL.

“I was supposed to miss baseball, too,” Jewart said. “They said the best I could hope for would be to pinch-hit here and there.

“But I worked with the trainer every day. I didn't want to miss this season. I figured we'd be good and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Jewart is hitting .475 this season. Lominski is hitting .444 with 19 RBI, Fitzingo .385 with 16 RBI.

“We're playing with a lot of confidence,” Fitzingo said. “We've been together for a long time.”

Lominski said the Warriors want to keep their win streak “rolling to the KSAC and District 9 championships, then on to the state tournament.”

It is at the state level Moniteau's players feel they have something to prove.

“Yeah, people don't respect (District 9) much,” Jewart said. “Teams in the state tournament look at us as an easy win.

“We want to show that we can play some good ball, too.”
