District not selling vacant Broad Street school

BUTLER TWP — The vacant Broad Street Elementary School in Butler is not on the market.

Butler School District Superintendent Brian White, responding to a question from the media at the end of Monday's school board meeting, did not say if the district has any specific plans for the building.

“I am not recommending we sell it right now,” White said.

The school was closed in 2015 as part of the district's consolidation plan. It is the only school building that the district is not using and has not sold.

It was put back into service last year as a temporary home for teachers and students from Summit Township Elementary School while Summit was being connected to a public water line, after water quality tests raised concerns about the amount of lead and copper in the water supply.

The school board in 2016 had an agreement to sell the school to The Arc of Butler County for $400,000, but the sale did not go through after Butler City Council declined a rezoning request from The Arc.

The district is also planning this summer to vacate the Harriger Educational Services Center building, home to its administrative offices, though plans for that building have yet to be announced.
