Get that bike, spring is here

It’s been the hottest topic around the water cooler at the gym and often times brought up at the register or while waiting in line to make small talk, “When will Spring arrive?” So we can only imagine how difficult it’s been for a lot of you to muster up the enthusiasm to get outside and ride. Shedding the winter layers of long sleeve jerseys and jackets and breaking out the short sleeve equipment for a Saturday ride only to drag the fleece back out Sunday. It’s been difficult and frustrating for many but in no time at all everyone will be feeling the heat and before you know it the grass will need cut along with other outdoor chores.

Pull that bike down from the hooks, get it looked over, dust off the running shoes or clean up the hiking boots and throw in some new laces. Spring is here, the foot races have started and trout season just kicked off!

Any of these activities get you outside and enjoying the outdoors. The Eagle also has other contributing writers for those activities so it’s easy to stay on top of things happening in those circles.

Recently I’ve started to add a few commuting days to my training by riding to teach spinning classes or to see local clients for personal training. Lots of people say “I wish I could do that!” Well you can but the biggest hurdle is the first step. Although we’ve ridden all winter I haven’t commuted much, well at least not as much as Travis who didn’t drive to work until mid-March.

Transitioning from inside the gym or from the couch can sometimes be difficult. Many of us are irritable like a bear waking up from hibernation. We immediately start feeling the pressure to catch up with all the neglected projects and repairs around the home. But taking some time to ride, walk or hike will help your mood and make those things easier. Remind yourself that we’re made to move and doing something fun increases happiness which will increase productivity.

OK enough about that, here’s some great ideas to get you out there. Local trail crews all over western PA are cleaning up wash outs and fallen trees this time of the year, which makes for a great way to meet people and learn the trails before you ride them. How about those 5K or half marathon foot races around the area? They are always looking for volunteers! So are many bike races! Another great opportunity to meet people and see different places all while getting outside and helping others!

There are many resources online to find places such as Rails to Trails or smaller parks with trail systems for bikes. Plan a Saturday adventure somewhere new with family and/or some friends. You don’t need to commit to an epic ride just pedal somewhere. Many of these places are around small towns rich in history and with local businesses that depend on the people passing through. On the other hand there are also many trails in the larger cities which make for a great way to get around unfamiliar territory. For instance the Pittsburgh trails have several parking areas with access. Take a bike lock and some cash and hit the city for lunch or even some shopping. Many cities such as Philly and Cleveland all have trail systems in and around them offering you exercise and an easy way to explore. You’ll feel so much less frustration riding rather than driving that you just may find you enjoy the city! Start your Spring off right and get outside.
