Freeport now 11-0 in softball

'Jackets clinch section title, 13-0

Miya Borghol hit a three-run homer and had four RBI on the day as Freeport's softball team clinched its section title with a 13-0 win over Valley.

Winning pitcher Ashleigh Schmidt hit a two-run homer for the Yellowjackets (11-0, 9-0). Claire Crytzer added a double and three RBI, Emily Schmidt two singles and a double.

Ashleigh Schmidt tossed a five-hit shutout and struck out eight in five innings.

Slippery Rock 17, Conneaut 7 — Cheyenne Hindman had two doubles, a single and drove in seven to lead the Rockets' onslaught.

Hindman also got the win, striking out seven.

Brynn Horner doubled twice and singled and Julianna Hutchinson tripled and double for Slippery Rock (9-4).

Logan Pistorius hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning to set the tone as Karns City won a wild 22-17 decision at Redbank Valley.

Cam Blair and Austin Rumbaugh had four hits each for the Gremlins (10-0) and winning pitcher Nolan Riley homered.

Redbank Valley 14, Karns City 11 — Alyssa Stitt homered, doubled and drove in four, but the Gremlins lost this slugfest.

Mackenzie Dunn also homered, singled twice and drove in three for Karns City (10-2).

Eliza Dohan and Kate Quinlan each scored four goals as Butler routed Baldwin, 20-5.

Chloe Wertz and Taryn Thompson each added three goals for the Golden Tornado.

Karolyn Miller and Maggue Fugh also found the net twice and Haley Knass and Julianna Monteleone also scored.

Shady Side Academy 16, Freeport 2 — Lizzy Burris and Taylor Lichty scored goals for the Yellowjackets.

Maddie Ravotti stopped 20 shots for Freeport.

Track and Field

The participants are set for the WPIAL Team Finals at 4 p.m. Monday at Baldwin.

The same four teams will compete in boys and girls Class AAA: Butler, North Allegheny, Hempfield and Norwin. Hempfield defeated the Mars boys, 103-47, in Tuesday's semifinal round.

The Class AA boys are Riverside, Freedom, Mohawk and South Park. Freedom defeated Freeport, 87-63, in the semifinals. The Class AA girls finalists are Shenango, Beaver, Mohawk and Burrell.

Moniteau's Kendall Grossman broke the school's girls pole vault record Tuesday, vaulting 11 feet, 6 inches in the Warriors' 81.5-68.5 win over Clarion.

She won the 400 meters as well. Moniteau's Alex Hartle won the 1,600 and 3,200, Cambrie Campbell the discus and javelin.
