DUI suspect, 23, placed on house arrest

Benjamin Sinz

CHICORA — A Fairview Township man is accused of injuring a woman in a two-vehicle crash while driving with more than twice the state's legal limit for alcohol.

Benjamin P. Sinz, 23, was arraigned Wednesday on felony and other charges in connection with the Feb. 17 wreck on the 400 block of Main Street in Chicora.

State police said they were called about 8:35 a.m. for the crash near Hummingbird Plaza. Troopers found Sinz's overturned pickup truck in the middle of the road.

Tire and road markings, according to court documents, indicated that the truck caused the collision with the other vehicle. Police said they also noticed open bottles of alcoholic beverages in the truck.

The other driver, Terri Saylor, suffered serious injuries including broken bones and internal bleeding, documents said. A medical helicopter flew her to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.

Sinz also was injured and he was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. Police said that while talking to Sinz they smelled alcohol on his breath.

He subsequently submitted to a blood draw, documents said, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.171 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Sinz on charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, a felony, as well as DUI and several traffic violations.

Stoughton ordered the defendant be placed on house arrest and wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor, an alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet.

The judge also imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sinz and prohibited him from traveling out of state.

Sinz's preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1 at Stoughton's office in Chicora. His attorney, Scott Andreassi, did not immediately return a telephone call Wednesday.
