Rockets fare well in meet

McDermott, Allen win events in Hermitage

Slippery Rock's Emma McDermott and Claudia Allen both earned a first-place finish at Saturday's Hermitage Track and Field Invitational.

McDermott won the girls long jump with a distance of 16 feet, three inches while Allen was tops in the 100 hurdles at 16.01 seconds.

The efforts helped the Rockets place second in the girls team standings with 87 points. Hickory won the team title with 130 points.

Following are the Slippery Rock athletes who earned a medal by placing in the top eight:

Boys

400 relay: 3-Slippery Rock (Chase Wolinski, Nathan Hyatt, Pat Shea, Ryan Putorti) 44.93; 1,600 relay: 7-Slippery Rock (Seth Slater, Kid Scarborough, Chase Wolinski, Eithan Beckwith) 3:44.51

Girls Lacrosse

Butler picked up its third win of the season by edging Villa Maria, 11-10.

Eliza Drohan paced the victory with six goals while Rylie Cranmer and Haley Knass both scored twice.

Maggie Fugh added one score for the Golden Tornado (3-6).

Baseball

Hunter Fitzingo tallied nine strikeouts with no walks and just two hits allowed in Moniteau's 12-0, five-inning win at Clarion.

Jake Jewart tallied two hits, including a double, with three runs scored and one batted it. Nathan Sosigian added a pair of base hits and two RBI for the Warriors (6-3).

Conneaut 10, Slippery Rock 3 — The Eagles managed four runs in both the third and fourth innings in this defeat of the Rockets.

Dylan Dingel went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Rockets (3-3, 1-1).

Softball

Faith Hansotte had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in two runs to help Butler defeat Highlands 9-3.

Lauren Hesidenz contributed two doubles and three RBI and Julia Gibson singled twice and drove in two.

Karns City 16, Union 1 — Mackenzie Dunn and Alyssa Stitt both homered as the Gremlins routed the Damsels.

Stitt finished the game with four runs scored and five RBI while Dunn scored three times and drove in three. Karns City 7, Redbank Valley 5 — In Saturday's second game, KC trailed 5-4 before taking the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning.

Logan Byers was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and just one walk in a complete game.

Boys Lacrosse

Freeport improved its record to 7-3 by winning both games of a double-header, 17-12 over Fairview and 16-4 against Fairmont (W.Va.).

Sean Fennel totaled 12 goals on the day and teammate Braith Kiser scored seven.

Nick Mattivi earned the win in net in both games, making 13 total saves.

Freeport defensemen Austin Kemp, Jarret Dougherty, Josh Bollinger and Hunter Turner combined to snag 28 groundballs.
