Freeport softball wins in 8th, stays undefeated

Moniteau baseball, Knoch softball post runaway victories

Madison Wagner singled with one out in the eighth inning and wound up scoring on an infield error in the eighth inning Friday as Freeport nipped Greensburg Salem, 6-5, in softball.

The Yellowjackets (6-0) stayed undefeated with the win.

Ashleigh Schmidt struck out nine in going the distance for the win. Jenna Hildebrand had a double, single and three RBI.

Tiffany Bruzda tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for Greensburg Salem.

Celia Knappenberger had five hits and eight RBI in the twinbill. Abby Black had a pair of RBI in the first game and Amanda Fischer struck out eight in three innings.

Baseball

Seven Moniteau players had at least two RBI Friday as the Warriors cruised to an 18-0 three-inning baseball victory over A-C Valley.

Hunter Fitzingo led the 18-hit attack, collecting a triple, double and single, three RBI and three runs scored. Jared Lominski and Gage Neal had three RBI each.

Wyatt Geibel and Andrew Dulya had two singles and two RBI, Nick Sosigian had three RBI and scored two runs while Chance Nagy had a pair of RBI.

Winning pitcher Lee DeMatteis allowed two hits and struck out four in three innings.

Knoch 11, Derry 4 — Gavin Phillips scattered two hits over four innings to get the win for the Knights (7-1, 6-1). Andy Pipes and Ethan Sloane both had a double and single, Pipes collecting three RBI.

Ben McMillen had two singles while Sloane, Alex Altmire and Jake Herrit scored two runs each.

Knoch plays at Highlands on Monday.

Hempfield 9, Butler 5 — The Golden Tornado (6-3, 3-2) dropped their third straight game, a non-section contest at Kelly Automotive Park.

The Golden Tornado return to section play Monday at Pine-Richland.

Mars 6, Armstrong 4 — Will Bednar struck out 11 for the Planets. Matt Fuller had a pair of singles, Frankie Craska and Joey Craska two RBI each.
