Make an example of those who threaten our schools

Enough is enough.

School districts across the country have seen a spike in threats after the mass shooting in February at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla. And Butler County is no different.

Butler School District alone has received 4 school threats since the Parkland massacre.

The conduct of school officials in the wake of these threat incidents has been exemplary. They’ve been timely and transparent when it comes to communicating with parents and the community about what has occurred, and they have shown a willingness to act quickly and alter policies and procedures to ensure students are safe on campus and in the classroom.

But prevention and safety are only a part of the equation.

The other part of the pie is punishment for those responsible for disrupting the lives of students, teachers and parents — and in that regard Butler County appears to be on the right track as well.

In March, Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said his office would begin working to make an example of people who perpetrate school threats. Goldinger said he would begin urging police to file charges against suspects as quickly as possible, and county prosecutors would begin pursing jail time for all suspects in school threat cases — including juveniles as defendants facing misdemeanor charges.

That’s the right response to this rash of threats — and no, there’s no room for leniency.

That’s because there’s no such thing as an unserious school threat. It doesn’t matter who issued the treat, where it was found or how it was delivered. School officials, law enforcement and parents cannot afford to sit idly by when someone calls the safety of our young people into question.

And if people young and old don’t understand that by now — if they can’t wrap their heads around the fact that too many students have already died for this kind of thing to be brushed off as a youthful prank or an unfortunate misunderstanding — then they deserve to be made examples of.

We applaud both the DA’s office and our school officials for using the full force of our criminal statutes and school district policies to punish the individuals behind these threats.
