Golden Tornado scores big at 54th annual Butler Invitational
The Butler girls took first place while the Butler boys snagged second in Friday's 54th annual Butler Track and Field Invitational.
Among Friday's highlights:
The Butler girls earned victories in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays, the 300 hurdles and the discus to earn 70¼ points for the Golden Tornado's third straight team title. In her final Butler Invite, senior Jena Reinheimer earned her first gold medal here with a discus throw of 136-9.
Noah Beveridge broke one of the oldest records at Butler High School when he eclipsed Ed Hartman's 1978 record in the 1,600-meter run. Hartman ran it in 4 minutes, 16.9 seconds in 1978. On Friday, Beveridge finished with a time of 4 minutes, 12.58 seconds – currently the 9th-fastest time in the country.
Seneca Valley senior Zach Gehm placed in three events, winning the javelin with a throw of 180 feet, 10 inches, finishing second in the shot put and third in the discus.
Local Boys Team Results: Butler, second; Seneca Valley, third; Mars, 21st; Grove City, 24th; Freeport, 33rd; Karns City, 35th; Slippery Rock, 40th; Moniteau, tied for 41st.
Local Girls Team Results: Butler, first; Seneca Valley, 16th; Moniteau, 25th; Knoch, 28th; Grove City, 31st; Freeport, 35th; Slippery Rock, 39th; Mars and Karns City, tied for 42nd.
