Mars lacrosse uses 1st-things-1st approach

Mars' Anthony Grieco (11) is an integral part of the Planets' boys lacrosse team again this season.

ADAMS TWP — The postseason is currently of no concern to the Mars boys lacrosse team.

The Planets certainly want to win a third straight WPIAL championship and make another run in the state playoffs after reaching the PIAA semifinals last year, but to accomplish those things, Bob Marcoux's squad must not rest on past feats.

One factor that keeps the Planets (4-1, 1-0) focused on the here and now takes place between games.

Mars was tasked with replacing four starters from last year, including goalie Jack Austin, defender Joe Crognale and midfielders Ben Lewis and Joe Horvat.

Anthony Grieco, a senior attackman, leads the team in both goals (17) and assists (9). Michael Doyle has contributed 13 goals, Moyer has scored 12 times, followed by Cade Hetzler and Nicholas Dinderman, who both have found the net 10 times.

Defensively, the Planets lost a major contributor in Crognale. Leaders on that end of the field this season include seniors Owen Corsi, Kyle Anderson, Kam Angeletti and junior Nate Smith.

Will Scurci has replaced Austin in net and “has the respect of the entire team,” according to Marcoux. “They're behind him.”

Mars is now a perennial WPIAL power and proved it was one of the best teams in the state with last year's 21-3 record and trip to the final four.
