Butler, Slippery Rock claim track crowns

Butler's track and field program flexed its muscles Saturday at the 40-team Tri-State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Championship at West Mifflin.

The Golden Tornado boys and girls squads both won team championships. Butler's girls won the TSTCA outdoor meet for the fourth consecutive year and have won the TSJTCA indoor meet three straight times.

Liz Simms won the 800 meter event in 2 minutes, 18.94 seconds. Maddie Tonini was second in the 400 in 1:00.83, Chesna Tomko second in the 300 hurdles in 45.61 seconds, Jena Reinheimer second in the discus with a toss of 133 feet, 11 inches.

The girls 4x800 meter relay won with a time of 9:41.40, fifth best time in the state so far this season. The 4x400 relay unit won in 4:01.33, third fastest time in the state thus far.

Jake Wolfrom placed in four events Saturday for the Butler boys.

Wolfrom placed second in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 110 hurdles. He also ran a leg of the Golden Tornado's 4x400 meter relay team, which placed second, and the 4x100 relay team that took sixth.

Noah Beveridge won the 3,200 meters, Jack Codispot was second in the pole vault, Doug Kostelansky second in the 800 meters and Brett Brady third in the 3,200.

Slippery Rock wins Big Red Invitational — The Rockets won the boys and girls team titoes Saturday at the Big Red Invite, hosted by West Middlesex.

The girls received first-place finishes from the 4x800, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, Macy McCall in the 100 hurdles, Anna Kadlubek in the 100 meters, Kira Bellis in the long jump and Emma McDermott in the triple jump.

On the boys side, Rod Williams ran a school-record 10.94 seconds in the prelims before winning the 100 meters. He also won the 200. Hunter Prementine won the long jump.

The Rockets' 4x100 meter relay team of Chase Wolinski, Nathan Hyatt, Pat Shea and Williams won with a school-record time of 44.64 seconds.

Nick Sosigian tossed a one-hitter and struck out 10 Saturday as Moniteau shut out Union, 10-0, in five innings at Kelly Automotive Park.

Chance Nagy had a double, single and four RBI for the Warriors. Hunter Fitzingo tripled and Nate Sosigian doubled, both driving home a run.

Knoch 17, Derry 4 — The Knights (6-0, 5-0) remained unbeaten as winning pitcher Jake Herrit benefitted from a 15-hit attack. Alex Altmire had a triple, single, collected five RBI and scored three runs.

Andy Pipes had a triple and three singles, Dylan Swarmer three singles. Steven McMillen and Gavin Phillips picked up their first varsity hits.

Knoch plays Monday at Deer Lakes.

Slippery Rock 11, Greenville 2 — Ricky Mineo had a triple, double and single while Walker Allison picked up two singles for the Rockets (3-2, 1-0) in this non-region game.
