Freeport's DeJidas hits for cycle in 9-3 'Jacket victory

SV softball nets win over P-R

Freeport junior Ally DeJidas hit for the cycle, scoring three runs and driving in four in the process, as the Yellowjackets defeated Valley 9-3 in high school softball play Thursday.

Ashleigh Schmidt also had a strong effort at the plate with a single, double and four runs scored.

Freeport improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in section games.

Knoch 8, Highlands 0 — Amanda Fischer starred in the circle and at the plate for the Knights (3-1, 2-1).

Fischer pitched a four-hit shutout while striking out 11. Offensively, she contributed three hits, including a triple.

Quinn Hughes added two singles and a double in the win.

Seneca Valley 7, Pine-Richland 1 — Karli Hacker totaled three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as the Raiders (3-3, 2-2) earned a Section 3-6A victory at home.

Claire Zimmerman allowed just one run on three hits while striking out six and walking two in a complete-game win.

North Allegheny 11, Butler 1 — Lauren Hesidenz tripled and drove in the lone run for Butler (2-4, 0-4) in this road defeat. Makenna Negley added a base hit in the loss.

Baseball

A four-run fourth inning spurred the Knights to an 8-5 win Wednesday at Greensburg Salem.

Ethan Sloane went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to pace Knoch (4-0, 3-0). Andy Pipes had four hits and scored twice and Alex Altmire also scored two runs.

Starting pitcher Jack Bartek earned the win, Gavin Phillips worked 1.2 innings of relief and Pipes was credited with a save.

Track and Field

Mars swept Armstrong, the boys winning 103-47, the girls 97-53. Hunter Boyd won the shot put and discus for the Planet boys. Kinsley Bitzer took the 100 hurdles and long jump for the girls.

Cranberry 78, A-C Valley 57 (boys); A-C Valley 78, Cranberry 58 (girls) — The Falcon girls used a foursome of Morgan Campbell, Chloe Dittman, Brooke Irwin and Allison Sherman to win the 4x400 relay over the Berries.

The boys were paced by junior Briar Kentzel, who won the 100 and 200 and ran a leg of the winning 1,600 relay quartet.

Austin Kemp won the shot put and discus to help Freeport's boys dominate in wins over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Leechburg and Springdale on Wednesday.

CWNC's Joe Kearney was the top overall finisher in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

In the girls' meet, Lurena Stewart won the 300 hurdles and contributed to the top 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams as Freeport defeated the same three schools.

Riley Kopchak, of CWNC, was first overall in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

Boys Volleyball

Butler improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in section play with a sweep of visiting Fox Chapel.

Cody Schnur had six kills and three blocks for the Golden Tornado, who downed the Foxes by scores of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-16.

Tyler Rankin had 23 assists in the win and Dan Kline chipped in eight digs.

Boys Lacrosse

Sean Fennel scored six goals for Freeport as the Yellowjackets held on for a 14-12 win over Meadville.

Brennon Riley and Garret Schaffhauser netted three goals each while Braith Kiser had two goals and a season-high seven assists.

Greg Smith and Nick Mattivi split time in goal and made 10 saves.

Freeport (5-2) plays at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Tuesday.
