3:30 p.m. Friday — A Slippery Rock University student was arrested after she allegedly shoved and elbowed a police officer trying to arrest her during an incident at a student apartment complex.

The incident began with an apparent disagreement between roommates, according to court documents. Police went to the apartment and found two students, including Essence L. Cooper, 19, of Uniontown, Fayette County, who refused to provide an officer with her identification, according to court documents.

The officer moved in to arrest Cooper, police said, and she “yanked her arm away” as police tried to place her in handcuffs; she eventually “shoved” and “elbowed” the officer, documents said.

Police subsequently handcuffed Cooper and took her to the station. After consulting with an assistant district attorney, police charged her with resisting arrest, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Cooper on the charges. She was placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.

Monday — Matthew G. Marchese, 22, of Middlesex Township was charged with drugged driving stemming from a February one-vehicle crash in Clinton Township.

Police said they were called about 9:50 p.m. Feb. 10 to the scene of the crash at Saxonburg Boulevard and Deer Creek Road. They found a car had struck a tree but no one was around. They traced the license plate to the defendant’s home.

Marchese answered the door, according to court documents, and he admitted driving the car. He said after the wreck he called a friend, who gave him a ride home. He acknowledged he did not report the wreck.

Marchese told police that he had not had anything to drink or smoke since he got home, documents said. But before returning to his house he allegedly admitted to having smoked marijuana.

Police took Marchese to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test, which confirmed he had marijuana and the prescription medication clonazepam in his system.

He is charged with driving under the influence, failing to immediately notify police of an accident, abandoning a vehicle on public or private property, failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes, and careless driving.

April 4 — Christopher S. Bowser, 31, of West Sunbury was charged with making a false written statement on a federal form that was required last year when he tried to buy a rifle at the Rural King store at Clearview Mall in Center Township.

Police said when his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, he was denied the purchase.

Bowser is charged with unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor.
