McLean keys Raiders' victory

Junior drives in 3 to lead SV; Butler softball picks up win

Josh McLean started the season in style.

The junior outfielder went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBI to help the Seneca Valley baseball team to a 4-2 home win over Bethel Park Monday afternoon in the opener.

DJ Alway picked up the win, striking out six and not walking a batter in three innings of relief.

The Raiders pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Maura Pasquale hit a solo home run in the first inning and Julia Ehrman and Madison Hans each doubled and singles as Seneca Valley opened the season with a 6-1 home win over Moon.

Claire Zimmerman picked up the win in the circle, striking out four, walking one and scattering four hits in seven innings. She also doubled.

Butler 10, New Castle 6 — Julia Gibson homered and drove in a pair of runs and Ali Graham picked up the win in the circle and also drove in three at the plate for the Golden Tornado (1-0).

Gibson also doubled and singled and Graham also doubled for Butler.

Faith Hansotte had four singles as the Tornado banged out 16 hits.

Knoch 13, Mars 0 — Emma Bradstetter doubled twice and drove in four runs and the Knights used an 11-run sixth inning to beat the Planets.

Celia Knappenberger got the win, striking out four in six innings of work.

Abby Black added a pair of singles and three RBI for Knoch.

Butler's Noah Beveridge placed first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs as Butler's boys blew past Knoch (133-17) and Pine-Richland (119-31).

Jena Reinheimer won the girls shot put and discus in the Golden Tornado's 128-22 and 107-43 wins over the Knights and Rams, respectively.
