Spring into action

I commend Chris Kubiak, director of education with the Audubon Society, for letting us know (“On Tap: Maple Madness planned later this month at Succop Nature Park,” March 18, Page B1) that climate change is having an enormous effect on our seasons in Butler County. Autumn is lasting longer; and spring is arriving sooner. As temperatures rise over time, it’s fortunate that we no longer need to cut ice from lakes and rivers for refrigeration.

It’s my hope that, during the Maple Madness event this Saturday at Succop Nature Park, folks will have the opportunity to become more familiar with the effects of climate change and decide to find ways to combat the problem. Citizens’ Climate Lobby (www.citizensclimatelobby.org) advocates a carbon fee and dividend program, putting a price on carbon emissions and returning the fees in the form of a dividend to all citizens.
