Top-seed Xavier out

UNC, Michigan State also upset victims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Florida State Seminoles are on their way to the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16 for the first time since 2011 after upsetting top-seeded Xavier with a furious comeback.

PJ Savoy made a 3-pointer with 1:08 left to give Florida State its first lead of the second half, and the Seminoles rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat the Musketeers 75-70 on Sunday night in the second round of the West Region.

Florida State (22-11) will play fourth-seeded Gonzaga on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

WVU 94, Marshall 71

SAN DIEGO — The fifth-seeded Mountaineers rolled past in-state rival Marshall to reach the Sweet 16.

Jevon Carter led four WVU (26-10) players in double figures with 28 points. Lamont West added 18.

Ajdin Penava netted 18 for Marshall.

Texas A&M 86, UNC 65

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Reigning national champion North Carolina sputtered to the worst NCAA Tournament loss of Roy Williams’ career on Sunday night, overpowered in its home state by Texas A&M.

It’s the second straight year the titleholder has been bounced from March Madness before the Sweet 16.

T.J. Starks scored 21 points and the No. 7 seed Aggies (22-12) manhandled the second-seeded Tar Heels.

Kansas St. 50, UMBC 43

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Barry Brown scored 18 points, and Kansas State ended UMBC’s brief, but historic run in the NCAA Tournament with a 50-43 victory on Sunday night.

As UMBC coach Ryan Odom emptied his bench with 9.4 seconds left, the crowd gave the Retrievers a standing ovation.

Syracuse 55, Michigan State 53

DETROIT — Syracuse barely got into the NCAA Tournament, getting the 68th and final spot.

The Orange have earned the right to keep playing in college basketball’s showcase. And, no one will be excited about facing that zone defense.

Tyus Battle had 17 points, Oshae Brissett scored 15, and 11th-seeded Syracuse zoned Michigan State out of the tournament, 55-53 on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16.

Nevada 75, Cincinnati 73

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Josh Hall converted an offensive rebound for the tiebreaking basket with 9.1 seconds left as Nevada erased a 22-point deficit in the final 11 minutes of a stunning 75-73 victory over Cincinnati in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Purdue 76, Butler 73

DETROIT — Dakota Mathias sank a 3-pointer with 14.2 seconds left and second-seeded Purdue, minus star center Isaac Haas, held off 10th-seeded Butler 76-73 on Sunday to reach the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year.

The Boilermakers (30-6) led by as many as 10 points in the second half.

Clemson 84, Auburn 53

SAN DIEGO — Gabe DeVoe scored 22 points and Elijah Thomas had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Clemson, which closed the first half with a 25-4 run that helped it beat cold-shooting Auburn 84-53 on Sunday and advance to the Midwest Region semifinal.
