Jackson OKs tax credits for volunteer firefighters

Harmony, Zelie have done same

JACKSON TWP — The township has become the latest municipality in the region to offer tax credits to eligible volunteer firefighters.

Supervisors approved the motion at their Thursday meeting, granting a tax credit to volunteer firefighters living in the township.

The tax credit is the same as those passed by Zelienople and Harmony this year.

The three municipalities are all serviced by the Harmony Fire District.

“That way it’ll be consistent across municipalities,” Chris Rearick, township manager, said in an interview earlier this year.

Cranberry Township was the first in the county to offer tax credits after Gov. Tom Wolf signed Act 172 into law in fall 2016.

The act allows municipalities to offer real estate or earned income tax credit to active members of volunteer fire companies and nonprofit emergency medical service agencies.

The board also approved a motion stating its intention to establish the Jackson Ridge Neighborhood Improvement District and appointed the Jackson Township Community Development Corporation as the Neighborhood improvement District Management Association for the project.

“It’s to construct a parallel access road as a part of the Jackson Ridge plan,” said Rearick. “The developer is ultimately paying for it by paying a spec assessment on the property.”

This will prevent the lots in the Jackson Ridge residential development from directly accessing Evans Road.

“The township and the developer cooperated to provide for that road in lieu of litigation and to provide a better design for the neighborhood overall,” said Rearick.
