Sarah Richard

DAYTON, Ohio — Sarah Richard of Evans City was named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Contact, a Boston-based nonprofit organization. Richard is a junior mechanical engineering major at the University of Dayton.

She is a river steward for the University of Dayton’s Rivers Institute, a trip and education program assistant supervisor for the university’s Outdoor Engagement Center, a director for REAL Dayton Community Immersion Alternative Break program and the Sustainability Club’s executive assistant.

In 2017, Richard interned at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Environmental Justice in Washington.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. Richard will participate in a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. She also will have access to exclusive scholarship and postgraduate opportunities.

NATRONA HEIGHTS — Students from Saint Joseph High School recently participated in the Pittsburgh Regional competition for National History Day at the Heinz History Center. The following sophomores were among those who placed at the Pittsburgh event and who will participate in the state competition.

In the group exhibit category, Jesse Walter, the daughter of Douglas Walter of Natrona Heights and Cindy Walter of Sarver, was in a group that won first place. Luke Zagurskie, the son of Charles and Sherri Zagurskie of Butler, and Nicholas Brackett, the son of Timothy and Karen Brackett of Butler, were in a group that won third place.

In the individual exhibit category, Beatrix Stickney, the daughter of Scott and Allison Stickney of Butler, won third place.

Benjamin Zock, the son of Michael and Sandra Zock of Saxonburg, was in a group that won third place for group documentary.

Sarah Preston, the daughter of Michael and Donna Preston of Butler, was in a group that won first place for group performance.
