State insurance agency recovers nearly $100M

The state recovered more than $98 million for insurance customers in 2017, Jessica Altman, Pennsylvania’s acting insurance commissioner, announced Wednesday at a conference in Pittsburgh.

The state’s insurance department reached settlements involving 33,138 consumers resulting in restoration of stolen funds, payment of unpaid insurance claims and refunds for premium overcharges, according to a news release.

Altman also advised consumers buying annuities, a type of investment, from insurance providers that they should know what type of annuity they are getting and that their money will be locked up for a set period of time. In some cases, companies prey on elderly people replacing one annuity with another, a process called “churning.”

She also warned retirees younger than 65 who are buying health insurance through the individual market to make sure that the plan they buy is compliant with the Affordable Care Act. The department has taken action against multiple agents who misrepresented health plans as complying with the Affordable Care Act.
