SV senior organizes update meeting on Hereford lake

ZELIENOPLE — A local high school senior wants to inform and engage the public about ongoing efforts to restore and refill Hereford Manor Lake.

Seneca Valley High School senior Will Adams is hosting an informational session about the lake, which was emptied in 2012 due to concerns about its deteriorating dams. The event is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Gregory School gymnasium in Zelienople.

“I chose this project because I am an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and I would love to see the lake restored,” Adams said in an email. “I became interested after seeing a local petition from (state) Rep. Aaron Bernstine about Hereford Manor. I decided that I wanted to conduct my project on something regarding the lake.”

The event also serves as his senior project.

“Through my project, I hope to raise awareness of the lake and efforts to restore it,” Adams said.

The lake is situated near the border of Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties and was once a hotbed of boating, fishing and all manner of outdoor activities across its 428 acres. In the six years since the closure, residents have worked to refill the lake. Tony Rich, president of the Beaver County Sportsmen’s Conservations League, estimated last year that the total cost to restore the lake would be around $22 million, with much of that expected to come from the state.

During the presentation, Bernstine will discuss the lake’s history and outline what needs to be done to restore it to its former state.
