No one injured in city fire

No one was injured in an apparent accidental fire Thursday morning at a home in the 500 block of Carbon Street.

No one was injured in an apparent accidental fire Thursday morning at a home in the 500 block of Carbon Street, authorities said.

Robert Glenn was home but the smell of smoke and working smoking detectors alerted him to the fire shortly before 11 a.m. in the living room of the 2½-story house, said Butler Fire Lt. Donald McCoy.

“The (cause of the) fire is undetermined at this time and remains under investigation,” he said. It appeared to have started in or around the couch, where Glenn had been smoking a cigarette.

Glenn told fire officials that he extinguished the cigarette and went into the kitchen to make lunch. A short time later, the fire started.

“He saw the fire in the couch area,” McCoy said. “He got a fire extinguisher and tried to put it out but couldn't. That's when he came out.”

But before he did, Glenn did something important.

“He pulled the front door shut,” McCoy said. “That helped to contain the fire to the area of origin.”

Crews went in through the front door and found heavy smoke and fire in the living room, said Butler Fire Capt. Jim Kaufman. The blaze was knocked down in minutes.

Fire damage was contained to the living room but smoke damage was sustained throughout the house. Kaufman estimated damage at $50,000.

William and Lucille Glenn are listed as the owners, according to the Butler County Assessment Office.

Robert Glenn is staying with friends, fire officials said, until the house can be repaired.
