This is a response to the letter written by James J. Knights (Misguded Efforts” March 8). Mr. Knights talks about all of the school children killed in the last five years, implying that that number is actually acceptable because it’s a lower than those killed in car crashes.That number is not acceptable!

You ask “where are the cries of indignation and outrage over car crashes and opioid deaths?”

Car crashes and opioid deaths are on the news virtually every night. Thousands of people — including myself — are working constantly to reduce those kinds of deaths and help in passing new laws to do so.

Here is a partial list of laws enacted to reduce teen traffic fatalities:

Teens must now have a minimum of 65 hours of instruction before they can test.

Teens must wait for six months after they get their permit before they can test.

Teens can not drive between 11 p.m.and 5 a.m.

Teens cannot carry more passengers than the number of seat belts available.

Teens cannot carry more than one passenger under the age of 18 for the first 6 months.

Teens get an automatic 90-day license suspension if they accumulate 6 points.

Teens are legally required to wear a seatbelt no matter where they are in a car.

Tees are not permitted to ride in the open bed of a pickup truck.

So tell me, how may laws have been enacted to protect the innocent children who have been killed in gun violence? Answer: none.

Why? Because there is money to be made by gun manufacturers and their puppets the National Rifle Association. They pretend to be standing up for your Second Amendment rights, and people are gullible enough to believe them.

My guess is that if one of those 576 children shot in school was one of your children, you would not have written such a heartless and callous letter.
