Moniteau looking for grid coach

Jon McCune
McCune leaves after 1 season for volunteer spot on SRU staff

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau High School is looking for a head football coach again.

Jon McCune's resignation after one season was accepted Monday night at the Moniteau school board meeting. The Warriors were 3-6 in 2017.

Their next head coach will be the program's fifth in seven years.

“Jon took an assistant coaching position at SRU (Slippery Rock University),” Moniteau athletic director John Stoughton said. “He wanted to get back into college football.

“He did a nice job here and we wish him well.”

McCune is a 2012 SRU graduate and was a graduate assistant football coach there. He is rejoining the staff this year as a volunteer assistant coach and will join assistant coach Frank Bongivengo in working with the wide receivers.

McCune will not be paid. He works full-time as a clinical manager at George Junior Republic.

“He approached me about wanting to join us,” SRU head coach Shawn Lutz said. “To be honest, I did everything I could do to discourage him. I told him to think it over for a long time and he did that.

“Jon wants to coach college football. He was enthusiastic about coming on board with us. He's a quality coach and we welcome him. But we certainly didn't want to take away Moniteau's head coach.

“I know how excited he was to get that (Moniteau) job,” Lutz added.

McCune moved from Fredonia, N.Y., to work in this area. He worked with a small roster at Moniteau. A 35-34 win over Redbank Valley to close the season snapped a five-game losing streak.

“The roughest part was the numbers,” McCune admitted. “We didn't have a lot of kids to start with and when injuries hit us, we were down to as few as 17 players.

“But my experience at Moniteau was tremendous. Those kids put their heart and soul into those games. It was a hard decision. I sent a mass e-mail out to all of my players thanking them.”

McCune said he saw that SRU had a volunteer assistant opening on its roster “and I couldn't pass up that opportunity.”

Coaching college football has been his ultimate goal.

“My first win as a head coach and that last game — a great win over a great team — will be among my fondest memories there,” McCune said of Moniteau.

“But coaching college football has been my dream. I love this area and I may be at Slippery Rock for quite some time. In years to come, I'm hoping a permanent paid position opens up for me somewhere.”

McCune succeeded Wade Vogan, who spent three seasons as Moniteau's head coach. Cecil Blauser was head coach in 2013, Jeff Campbell in 2012.

The Warriors have not had a winning season since 2011, when they went 12-1, claimed the District 9 championship and lost to WPIAL champion Aliquippa in the state playoffs.

Stoughton said the school district is hoping to name a head football coach in two weeks.

“We got a jump on this,” he said. “The job's been posted for a week now and we've gotten a number of candidates. We plan to do interviews this week.

“At the March 26 (board) meeting, we expect to name our coach. That's the plan, anyway.”

McCune is on the list of substitute teachers at Moniteau. He is already working with the SRU football coaches as that staff is preparing for its spring practices and spring game.

“The administration and coaches at Moniteau were 100 percent supportive of me,” McCune said. “It's their business, of course, who the next coach will be.

“I told them if they'd like any assistance from me in that process, I'd be more than happy to help out. They were there for me and I'll gladly be there for them.”
