7 a.m. Thursday — Gary R. Koval, 36, of Saxonburg was caught with suspected heroin and other contraband at an apartment in the 300 block of Virginia Avenue.

Police were called to the apartment for a disturbance, according to court documents, and found Koval, who appeared to have suffered an overdose. He was in a fetal position and his face was discolored.

An officer tried to awaken the defendant and he eventually came to, police said. He admitted having recently done heroin.

Police found him with several bags of suspected heroin and a metal spoon with white power residue on it. Koval is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

8:30 a.m. Sunday — A 16-year-old student landed in trouble with the law after a fight at Butler High School.

The student, a girl, is accused of hitting a 15-year-old student, also a girl, in the head and face. The younger student suffered minor injuries.

Police did not identify the 16-year-old, who is charged in Butler County juvenile court with simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.

March 7 — William A. Betcher, 57, of Butler Township was charged with illegally trying to buy a gun last year at a Center Township store.

Betcher allegedly provided false information on his background check application April 23 when he attempted to purchase a .380-caliber pistol at the Rural King at Clearview Mall.

When his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, he was denied the purchase.

Betcher is charged with unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony, and making a false statement, a misdemeanor.

2:12 a.m. March 3 — Rodger E. Shelatree, 28, of Butler was arrested for drunken driving after he was stopped for speeding on Route 8 near Fox Hollow in Center Township.

Police said pulling him over, the defendant’s car crossed both the center yellow line and the white fog line. Shelater admitted that he had been drinking before driving, according to court documents.

He failed field sobriety tests and was taken for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.156 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to driving under the influence, Shelatree is charged with speeding, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.
