Raiders advance in Penguins Cup with 4-1 victory

WARRENDALE — Facing an early deficit is not a common occurrence for Seneca Valley's hockey team.

Winning games is and the Raiders put their stamp on Monday's playoff game in the second period.

SV's Andrew Dimond, Bryce Korner and Noah Watkiss each scored in the period as the Raiders rolled over Bethel Park, 4-1, in a Class AAA first-round meeting at Baierl Ice Complex.

The effort came after the team managed just seven shots on goal and trailed 1-0 after the first period.

“We have a lot of guys who were getting their first varsity playoff experience tonight,” said SV coach Anthony Raco. “I don't know if it was nerves in that first period, but we just needed to find our game and start putting more shots on net.”

Dimond helped put the SV faithful at ease with his equalizer two minutes and 58 seconds into the second period. Black Hawks' goalie Nick Guimond made back-to-back saves as a number of players converged at the front of the net, but Dimond made him pay for allowing a second rebound.

Korner's tally came just over six minutes later and Watkiss scored on a power play with 1:34 left in the period.

Bethel Park (7-12) seemed unable to halt SV's momentum, but the Raiders had to deal with another foe they weren't expecting to encounter.

In between the second and third periods, the Zamboni quit running on the ice. It was removed after a few minutes, but left divots that needed to be repaired. The process caused an hour-long delay.

“Both teams had to deal with it,” said Raco, “but from our perspective, with the way we had played in the second period, we just wanted to get back out there and play.”The Raiders never let Bethel Park score to make things interesting in the third period, holding the Black Hawks to six shots.Forward Vince Vituccio had given the Black Hawks an early lead when he beat SV goalie Logan Johnson just 1:38 into the game. Johnson, who entered the game with a save percentage of 93.0, turned away Bethel Park the rest of the night. That included making eight saves on a pair of Black Hawk power plays later in the first period.Johnson ended the game with 26 saves.“You don't want to give up an early goal, but all in all, we were down just 1-0,” Raco said. “Logan doesn't let much bother him and those saves he made to help kill those penalties were very big.”Tyler Draper scored an empty-net goal for SV in the final minute of the game. Guimond finished with 21 saves, Hunter Mueller a pair of assists. The Raiders (13-6) will next play March 15 in the semifinals.
