Another shooting threat at Butler schools

Student under investigation after Monday bus incident

A Butler student is being investigated by police after allegedly talking about a school shooting on the school bus Monday.

“This afternoon a student who attends Center Avenue School allegedly made a disturbing verbal statement that he was going to 'shoot up' the school and asked if anybody wanted to join him,” Superintendent Brian White wrote in a letter to parents Monday evening.

The student was riding the bus home from the school when he allegedly made the statement, White said in an interview Monday night. White said the student is a minor, but declined to give more specific information.

The student was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing with the school board. School officials determined that there was no immediate danger to the school and did not plan to cancel or make any changes to classes Tuesday, White said.

The bus was in the city of Butler at the time of the incident and the city police are conducting an investigation, White said.

White declined to say who reported the alleged threat, but in his letter he thanked those who showed responsibility by reporting the incident. The district takes all threats seriously and will take appropriate disciplinary action under the student code and the criminal code, he said.

“I encourage anybody who sees or hears any disturbing statements involving our schools or our students to immediately report it to the school district and law enforcement,” White wrote.

White would not say if it was a boy or a girl or how old the student is.

Center Avenue Community School since 2015 has offered an alternative high school program and emotional support program for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

This is not the first recent threat involving shooting and the Butler School District.

Bryan P. Flecken, 28, of Bridgeville has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor terroristic threats after allegedly writing about “shooting up” one of the Butler schools in a Facebook comment last month.
