Finishing in style

Seneca Valley's Kendall Craig swims the 200 individual medley against Butler at Seneca Valley Thursday. The Raiders girls and boys swept the Golden Tornado and finished the season 12-1.
Seneca Valley swimmers wrap up dual meet season with sweep of rival Butler

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley closed the swim and dive team schedule in style Thursday night, with the girls defeating visiting Butler 102-81 and the boys prevailing 105-72.

Both Raider squads finish with a 12-1 record.

“We were trying to get a lot of the kids to WPIAL cuts tonight,” said SV coach Brian Blackwell. “It was a good atmosphere for it, too, with it being Senior Night.”

Seneca Valley's depth proved to be the difference as the Raiders and Golden Tornado both won six events in each meet.

Two seniors that were honored before the meet — Connor Quiggle and Christian Sawyer — tied for the top spot in the boys 100-yard breaststroke. Quiggle also contributed to relay wins in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle.

“In all, we're losing six seniors on the boys side (including Paul Gianakas, Jake Lee, Mark Kunkel and Andy Ferguson),” added Blackwell. “They've done a lot of good things for us and we'll be sad to see them go.”

SV sophomore Owen Blazer was a double-winner in the butterfly and backstroke.

SV's girls received two wins from seniors Peyton Moore (diving) and Taylor Barry (500 freestyle).

With the WPIAL swim meet right around the corner (March 1-2), all swimmers have one more opportunity to qualify if they haven't done so already.

“We're taking a few swimmers to the Last Chance Meet (Saturday) and will go into that with a positive attitude,” said Blackwell. “You are only allowed as many as four swimmers in each individual event at WPIALs and we have a few cases where we have qualified five. So, we have some tough decisions to make.”

Butler's Alex Deemer placed first in the 100 and 200 freestyle and swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay squad.

Abbie Griffith (butterfly, backstroke) and Laura Goettler (200 IM, breaststroke) won two events for Butler's girls. Both helped the Tornado begin the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.

Butler's boys finish the season 5-6, while the girls dropped to 4-7.

“We're still putting pieces to the puzzle together,” said Tornado coach Dave Bocci. “We have a good 8th-grade class coming up, so that will help.”
