More rain on the way; flood watch issued for Butler County

Orchard Lane in Middlesex Township.

With rain continuing to fall throughout Butler County Friday, the National Weather Service said more flooding was expected.

A flood watch, which signals the potential for flooding, was extended until 6 p.m. Friday, while a flood warning, which is more severe and signals flooding is imminent or occurring, was issued until 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Lee Hendricks, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the watch and warning will remain in effect while rain continues to fall.

Hendricks said Slippery Rock reported nearly an inch of rain falling by Friday morning. As of 9 a.m. Friday, the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport was reporting that 1.43 inches of rain had fallen since noon Thursday.

Hendricks said rain will continue to fall throughout the day, with potential for some dense fog.

“It will be fairly miserable, but it will be mild,” he said, saying temperatures will be in the upper 40s, until dropping to the lower 30s by the late afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to fall to around 18 degrees overnight, with the potential for any puddling on the roads to freeze, Hendricks said. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 20 mph.

On Saturday, Hendricks said the forecast is expected to be partly cloudy with some snow likely in the afternoon, but no accumulation is expected, and high temperatures are predicted in the mid 30s.

These Butler County roads are closed due to flooding according to PennDOT:

Route 38 between Route 68 in Summit Township and Mahood Road in Oakland Township

Route 3006, Renfrew Road, between Three Degree Road and Hicks Road in Penn Township

Route 2002, Herman Road, between Stutz Road and Simon Drive in Summit Township

Route 3025, Yellow Creek Road, between Little Creek Road and East Lancaster Road in Lancaster Township.
