Simms, Tornado indoor squad shine on track

Liz Simms had herself quite a day.

The Butler junior broke her own school indoor record in the 800 meters Saturday at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet at Edinboro University. She ran a 2:18.97, beating her former mark of 2:19.46 set last year.

Simms also joined Gabrielle Boden, Maddie Tonini and Chesna Tomko in winning the 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relays, bettering the indoor state qualifying times in both.

The Golden Tornado girls team won all four relays and Maggie Welty won the mile race.

On the boys side, Brett Brady won the mile race and joined Tim Porter, Cole Thompson and Skyler Vavro in winning the distance medley relay.

Youngstown State Invite — Claudia Allen broke Slippery Rock's indoor record in the high jump, leaping four feet, eight inches in a sixth-place finish. She placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.97 seconds.

Sierra Nagy was fifth in the long jump for the Rockets with a 15-11.5. Ashlee Wherthey was sixth with a 15-7.25.

On the boys side, Pat Shea placed seventh with a 19-5 in the long jump.

Boys Basketball

Allderdice (20-2) reeled off its 17th consecutive win Saturday in topping Seneca Valley, 75-65.

Dalton Peffer scored 20 points and David Ritchie 19 for the Raiders (14-8), who trailed 46-23 at halftime.

Knoch 38, Steel Valley 35 — The Knights (7-14) ended their season with a win as Julian Sanks scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Knoch took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter and held on.

Emma McDermott scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Slippery Rock (16-4) to a 48-37 win at Indiana.

Anna Kadlubek had 10 points, Hallie Raabe and Jenna Heitzenrater nine rebounds each for the Rockets.

Wrestling

Seneca Valley was knocked out in the consolation round of the PIAA Class AAA team tournament Saturday, losing to Canon-McMillan 27-23.

Canon-Mac wound up fourth overall while Kiski Area — which defeated SV in the semifinals — lost the championship match to Bethlehem Catholic.
