SV wrestlers handle Carrick in PIAA tourney

Seneca Valley recorded six wins by pin Monday night in rolling over Carrick, 60-11, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Tournament.

Winning by fall for the Raiders (15-2) were Alejandro Herrera at 106 pounds, Dylan Chappell at 113, Antonio Amelio at 132, Tyler Gross at 170, Patrick Johnson at 182 and Nick Funovits at 220.

Gross pinned his foe in 17 seconds.

The Raiders will compete in Hershey on Thursday in the state tourney.

Penn-Trafford Tournament — Butler placed second out of 11 teams Saturday, trailing only Belle Vernon.

Three Golden Tornado wrestlers — Nate McMaster at 120 pounds, Jack Codispot at 145 and Christian Sequete at 182 — placed second in their respective weight classes. Sequete dropped a 6-3 decision to defending state champion John Wallace of Albert Gallatin for only his second loss of the season.

Justin Stewart went 3-2 at 160 pounds and Colton Spohn 3-2 at 126 for Butler.

Girls Basketball

Lauren Wasylson scored 30 points — including five 3-pointers — to lead Mars to a 68-45 home victory over Franklin Regional.

The Planets (16-4, 10-1) received 23 points from Tai Johnson. Mars scored 44 points in the second half to break the game open.

Indoor Track

Butler set a school record in the 4x400-meter relay and numerous Golden Tornado athletes claimed first-place finishes Sunday at the Mount Union (Ohio) High School Open.

Cade Gratzmiller, Jake Wolfrum, Ryan Marcella and Noah Beveridge ran the record-setting relay. Other winners for the Butler boys were Jack Codispot in the pole vault, Beveridge in the 800 meters, Skyler Vavro, Tim Porter, Brett Brady and Josh Fry in the 4x800 meter relay.

On the girls side, the 4x800 meter relay team of Erin LeMay, Maggie Welty, Emma LeMay and Liz Simms won with a state qualifying time of nine minutes, 56.88 seconds.

Welty won the 1,600 meters, Jena Reinheimer the weight throw, Maddie Tonini, Anna Baxter, Heidi Bednarz and Simms the 4x800 meter relay.

Butler placers in the meet follow. The Tornado return to action Saturday at Edinboro University.

Aaron Drake scored 18 points and also had five assists as the First Baptist boys basketball team edged Evangel Heights Christian Academy, 58-54.

Derek Butterworth added 14 points and five steals and Ben Drake had 14 points and 18 rebounds for First Baptist.
