Huge run sinks Butler

32-8 outburst gives Indians shocking win

ROSS TWP — Kamron Taylor's jumper bounced off the rim as the third quarter buzzer sounded.

It was the lone miscue turned in by the North Hills junior guard in the period.

Taylor sank eight of nine shots from the floor, scoring 19 points during the quarter — a period in which the Indians outscored Butler 32-8. The outburst paved the way for an 82-55 North Hills Section 1-6A boys basketball win over the Golden Tornado.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Butler (13-2, 5-2) and ended a four-game skid for North Hills (3-11, 1-6).

“They played great tonight. We have to give them credit,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “But we could have gotten back quicker on defense and made things harder on them.

“They kept beating us down the floor ... lay-up after lay-up after lay-up.”

Taylor wound up with 35 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in the contest.

“Kam definitely got into a comfort zone out there,” North Hills coach Buzz Gabos said.

The Tornado took a 29-28 lead into halftime despite sinking just nine of 30 shots from the floor. Mattix Clement sank a pair of treys in the second quarter.

Taylor scored the first eight points of the second half — all on field goals — and the Indians began the third period with a 26-4 run to seize control of the game.

The 82 points mark the most Butler has allowed in a game this season.

“The scoring is always good, but I liked the way we dug in and played defense tonight,” Gabos said. “We challenged their shots more in the second half.

“Every season, every team is going to have a game like this in their favor and one not in their favor. This was one of those games for us tonight. Everything just clicked.”

Butler sank only three treys all night after striking for 13 on 26 shots from beyond the arc Thursday night in winning at Seneca Valley.

“We shot 12 percent on three's tonight, we didn't clear the boards and we didn't get back on defense,” Clement said. “Factor all of that in and this is what can happen.

“We did not take North Hills lightly. Nobody respects this section more than I do. Every game is a grind. It's been a rough week, with game cancellations, the weather, playing last night, but those are excuses.

“Bottom line is, we have to shoot better, rebound better, play better and coach better,” Clement added.

Jordan Albright scored 15 points for North Hills while Alex Brown had 10 points and four assists, Garret Barto nine points and 11 rebounds. The Indians enjoyed a 41-32 advantage on the boards.

Ethan Morton scored 26 points, had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists for Butler. No other Tornado player scored more than six points.

“What's important about this game for us is our first section win,” Gabos said. “We've gone through a rough stretch.

“We don't consider ourselves contender for that last playoff spot right now, but you can't get the second win until you get the first.”

Clement said Butler will be a different team Tuesday night, when it hosts Shaler.

“I know we have a resilient bunch of kids with a will to win,” he said. “The team that walks into our gym Tuesday night won't be the team we looked like tonight.”
