Butler teen shoots himself in the arm

Butler police say a 17-year-old boy is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself in the arm this week.

But certain details about the shooting apparently remain unclear. Investigators said the boy, who they did not identify, also initially lied to them about what happened.

Police learned of the shooting shortly after noon Tuesday when they were called to the Butler Memorial Hospital emergency room where the teen was being treated for a gunshot wound.

Officers spoke to his parents, who advised them their son had been shot the previous night, purportedly during a stickup.

Police at the hospital spoke to the boy, who claimed he was walking along railroad tracks on Negley Avenue in the city’s Island neighborhood when an unknown male approached him.

The supposed stranger showed a gun and demanded money. The teen said when he refused, he was shot.

Police went to where he claimed he was shot but they found no evidence to substantiate his story.

The investigation continues, police said, and undetermined charges are pending against the boy. Police declined further comment.
