Mayor promotes low taxes as a business draw

Mayor Jondavid Longo

SLIPPERY ROCK — Mayor Jondavid Longo is encouraging New Castle businesses to look at what Slippery Rock has to offer.

In a letter written by state Rep. Aaron Bernstine, R-10th, Longo joins with surrounding communities encouraging New Castle businesses facing a recently passed stormwater management tax to compare Slippery Rock's tax rate and community support.

The tax, which could cost a business $15,000 per year, inspired Bernstine to showcase his district, which includes Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence counties.

Beaver Falls Mayor George Quay, New Brighton Mayor Tom Albanese and Ellwood City Mayor Tony Court also signed the letter.

“This isn't a shot at New Castle,” Longo said. “This is more of a promotion of Slippery Rock Borough.”

Longo said businesses could be drawn to the borough because its millage rate of 21.87 is almost half of New Castle's millage rate of 41.66.

“I am personally dedicated to lowering the tax burden to Slippery Rock citizens and to the businesses,” Longo said.
