Jan. 10 — Mark A. Degroot, 24, of Buffalo Township was charged with drugged driving stemming from a call last month to a convenience store for an intoxicated man sitting on the floor and slurring his words.

Police said they got to the GetGo store on Route 356 shortly after 11:30 a.m. Dec. 31 and found Degroot leaning against the cashier’s counter. He appeared to be impaired, according to court documents. He denied having consumed alcohol but admitted taking prescription drugs.

He also acknowledged having driven a car, which belonged to the store to buy cigarettes. Police noted the vehicle’s windshield was broken and the inspection sticker was expired.

Additionally, he is accused of shoplifting a box of antacid at the store.

Due to his condition, documents said, police did not have the defendant perform field sobriety tests. He was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, Allegheny County, for a blood test. Toxicology reports were still pending.

Degroot is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, public drunkenness, retail theft, driving without a license, driving without insurance, driving without valid inspection and with an obstructed windshield, a license plate violation and failing to carry his vehicle registration card.

Wednesday — Police reported they are investigating a case of identity theft during which someone used a Franklin Township woman’s credit card, without her permission or knowledge, to make purchases in February 2017. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-284-8100.

Jan. 10 — Brandyn J. Bowser, 24, of Fairview Township was charged in connection with a hit-and-run wreck last month in which a Chicora house was struck and damaged.

The occupants of the home on the 200 block of Kittanning Street told police they were inside about 9 p.m. Dec. 14 when they heard a “loud noise from outside,” according to court documents. They saw the damage to the house and notified 911. The unknown vehicle believed to have hit the house was gone.

The police investigation determined the vehicle had traveled off the left side of the road and continued through the yard, hitting a mailbox before hitting the house.

Investigators retrieved several pieces and parts of the suspected vehicle that were laying beside the house, documents said. On one of the parts was a number, which was used to identify the vehicle as a black, 2012 to 2015 Toyota pickup truck.

Police checked with auto repair shops in the area and found what they believed was the truck that had hit the house. The pickup belonged to Bowser.

A trooper on Dec. 23 spoke to the defendant at his house. He claimed he damaged his truck in a crash outside Bruin. Police checked that area but could find no evidence of any crashes as Bowser described.

In addition to hit-and-run, he is charged with trespass by vehicle, failing to stop and give information and render aid following an accident, failing to immediately notify police of an accident, making a false report, disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed and careless driving.

Jan. 10 — Police charged Michael L. Hodges, 35, of Butler with driving a stolen car stemming from a September traffic stop for speeding in Middlesex Township.

Hodges was pulled over in the 1997 Nissa Sentra about 4 a.m. Sept. 10 for traveling 80 mph in a 50 mph zone on Route 8 just north of Dinnerbell Road, according to court documents.

While behind the car, police saw a piece of paper come out of one of the passenger side windows. Police stopped the vehicle just south of Old Route 8.

Hodges, who it turned out was wanted on a state parole violation, acknowledged that he was “probably speeding a little,” documents said, and he subsequently let police search the car. The search turned up marijuana, drug smoking devices, a syringe and other contraband.

Police later found that the car the defendant was driving had been reported stolen.

Hodges, who is being held in the State Correctional Institution at Mercer, is charged with a felony count of receiving stolen property. Additionally, he is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, speeding, driving with a suspended license, driving without a license and littering on a highway.

Also charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and littering on a highway, were Hodges’ three passengers: Tiana T. Gladkoff, 22, of Butler; Teia M. Neely, 36, of Slippery Rock; and Stanford A. Russell Jr., 26, of Pittsburgh.
