ATV driver accused of DUI after traffic stop on Route 8

CLAY TWP — A 52-year-old township man is accused of being nearly twice the state's legal limit for alcohol while speeding home from a bar at night aboard an all-terrain vehicle on Route 8.

State police on Wednesday charged Terry D. Young with driving under the influence, speeding and other traffic violations stemming from his arrest in October.

Two troopers were on patrol about 11 p.m. Oct. 20 when they spotted an ATV traveling south on Route 8. ATVs are not permitted on public roads.

The officers turned around and saw the vehicle turn left onto Euclid Road. While catching up to the ATV, police said, the cruiser's speedometer hit 70 mph in the 45 mph zone.

The four-wheel vehicle also crossed over the double yellow line several times, according to court documents. Police eventually stopped Young as he pulled onto Beaver Dam Road.

The defendant told police that he was coming from a bar on Route 8 in Clay Township and was headed to his home on Euclid Road.

He agreed to perform field sobriety tests but he did not complete them. He was subsequently taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence.

A breath test at the barracks in Butler Township showed Young's blood-alcohol level was 0.156 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.
