3 wrecks take place in Center

CENTER TWP — Winter weather likely was a factor in three unrelated crashes Saturday in the township, authorities said.

A man believed to be in his 20s was hurt about 1:50 p.m. after he lost control of his Ford Explorer traveling down slush-covered Lions Road.

The vehicle traveled off the road and into a ditch, rolling on its side and hitting a tree before ending back up on its wheels, emergency crews said.

The driver suffered minor injuries, said Nathan Wulff, chief of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department. A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to him. He told officials that he would seek treatment at the hospital on his own.

The vehicle was severely damaged and had to be towed.

Earlier, about 2:50 a.m., a pickup truck struck and sheared off a utility pole along South Benbrook Road headed toward Route 8.

The driver, a man in his late-30s to early-40s, was not injured.

“There was six inches of snow on the road,” Wulff said. “It was fully covered.”

Firefighters helped remove a piece of the damaged Century Link-owned pole from the road.

At 5:14 p.m., a third one-vehicle accident happened on Route 8 near the intersection with Unionville Road, according to state police.

Maggie E. Lazaro, 25, was driving south when she hit a patch of ice and snow and spun out, hitting a tree on the opposite side of the road. She suffered minor injuries to her head and legs, but was not taken to the hospital, police said.

State police investigated all three accidents, though more information was not available.
