Carmody sparks Mars triumph

Robby Carmody scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter Saturday as Mars pulled away from Wheeling Central for a 77-70 boys basketball victory at Wheeling Jesuit University.

The game was tied at 54 entering the final quarter.

Three other Planets scored in double figures. Andrew Recchia netted 19 points, Cade Hetzler 16 and Michael Carmody 10.

Mars (7-2, 2-0) sank 17 of 19 free throws.

The Planets host undefeated Moon (9-0, 2-0) in a key section game Tuesday night.

Hickory 57, Grove City 48 — Martin Beatty scored 11 points for the Eagles (7-2), who lost for just the second time this season.

Brayden Martin and Marcos Cintron scored 10 points each. Hickory outscored Grove City 18-7 in the second quarter and was led by Bender with 15 points.

The Eagles won the JV game, 61-57, as Danny Timko scored 20 points and Brady Callahan added 13.

Grove City travels to Farrell on Tuesday.

Indoor Track

Slippery Rock competed in its first meet of the season Saturday at Youngstown State. Claudia Allen leaped four feet, six inches to break SR's indoor high jump record.

Allen also placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles. Ashlee Wherthy had a 31-3 in the triple jump to place second and Ryan Putorti broke his own school record by running the 60 meters in 7.55 seconds.
