Planets nipped in Fla. tourney

Robby Carmody scored 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds despite playing in foul trouble Wednesday, but could not prevent Mars' first loss of the boys basketball season.

The Planets (5-1) dropped a 78-76 decision to Corbin (Ky.) in the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Andrew Recchia scored 18 points for the Planets, Brandon Caruso 11 and Cade Hetzler 10. Mars took a 65-59 lead into the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold it. Carmody fouled out of the game.

Andrew Taylor paced Corbin with 36 points and 13 rebounds. Chandler Stewart added 18 points.

A-C Valley 65, Redbank Valley 54 — Dalton Callander scored 18 points for the Falcons while Eddie Stevanus added 15.

Nick Smith and Brock Barrett scored 15 points each for Redbank Valley.

Grove City 62, Conneaut 51 — Logan Lutz paced the Eagles (3-0) with 26 points. Martin Beatty added 12.

The Eagles took a scant 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter before pulling away. Ashey paced Conneaut with 20 points.

Grove City hosts Slippery Rock Friday night.

Girls Basketball

Ellie Thompson led three A-C Valley players in double figures with 17 points as the Falcons defeated Redbank Valley, 55-29.

Kylie Eaton added 11 points and Olivia Boocks 10 for the Falcons. Tara Hinderliter scored 14 for the Bulldogs.

Sharpsville 43, Grove City 34 — Abby Biddle scored 13 points and Clara Hannon 12 for the Eagles.

Private Schools

Michaella Roth scored 19 points and had eight steals Tuesday in First Baptist Christian's 31-30 girls basketball win over Western Pennsylvania School of the Deaf.

Alexis Barnhart added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Wrestling

Seneca Valley recorded seven pins in earning a 67-12 victory over Knoch. Scoring falls for the Raiders were Dylan Chappell at 113 pounds, Antonio Amelio at 138, Drew Vlasnik at 145, Nick Montalbano at 152, Michael Adamson at 160, John Siwiak at 195 and Nick Funovits at 220.

Winning by technical fall for SV were Louis Newell at 126 and Tyler Gross at 170.

Eric Green at 182 pounds and Saavon Mosby at 285 had pins for Knoch.

Bowling

Cole Thrash rolled a 654 series and 234 high game Wednesday as the Butler boys defeated Seneca Valley, 7-0, at Mars Lanes. Jordan Reges added a 235 game and 629 series.

The Golden Tornado boys have won 48 matches in a row and have not lost since December iof 2015.

Butler's girls also posted a 7-0 win as Mercedes Belch rolled a 198 game and 515 series. Nicole Nebel added a 506 series as the girls' winning streak reached 35 games.

Butler returns to section play Jan. 8 against North Allegheny.

In other action:

Freeport's boys defeated Shaler 5-2 as Mark Livingston rolled a 247 game and 675 series. Issaic Spencer rolled a 168.

The Yellowjacket girls dropped a 7-0 decision. Caitlyn Crissman rolled a 165 for Freeport.
