Mars welcomes Johnson back in 58-50 victory

Tai Johnson returned to the Mars girls basketball lineup Tuesday night — and made quite an impact.

The junior scored 16 points and sparked a rally as the Planets defeated Montour, 58-50.

Mars (3-3) trailed by 10 points in the second quarter when Johnson was inserted into the lineup.

“She made quite a difference,” Mars coach Dana Petruska said of Johnson, who was returning from an off-season injury. “It's good to have her back. Hopefully, we can keep her back now.”

Lauren Wasylson scored 14 points for the Planets while Bella Pelaia and Ellie Coffield netted 12 each. Mars returns to action Friday at Plum.

Karns City 60, Union 21 — Emily Hegedus scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Gremlins at Union.

Livia Andreassi added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Gremlins, who improved to 4-1 on the year. Karns City hosts Moniteau Friday night.

Frankee Remmick paced Union with six points.

Moniteau 51, Keystone 44 — Emma Bair led the Warriors (2-3) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Izzy Bair contributed 16 points and six boards.

Moniteau plays at Karns City Friday night.

General McLane 54, Grove City 35 — Macguire Gubba had 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Clara Hannon led Grove City (2-3) with 16 points.

Boys Basketball

Brian Davidson led three Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic players in double figures with 20 points as the Trojans defeated Vincentian, 57-46.

Mike Drambel added 14 points and John Fukon 12. CWNC hosts Freedom on Friday.

West Allegheny 65, Knoch 48 — The Knights trailed 44-13 at halftime. Jared Schrecengost scored 12 points for Knoch (2-3, 0-2).

Shady Side Academy 73, Freeport 63 — No other details were available from this non-section loss for the Yellowjackets (2-3).

Dubois Central 70, A-C Valley 61 — Dom Callender scored 17 points and Eddie Stevanus 10 for the Falcons (2-3) in this Monday game. Justin Miknis paced Dubois Central (2-3) with 33 points while John Swalligan scored 12.

Springdale 54, Summit Academy 53 — The winless Knights outscored the hosts by seven in the fourth quarter, but fell a point short. Brian Noel had 13 points and Jaylon Ketchum 12 for Summit Academy.

M. Zolnierczyk led Springdale with 24 points. Summit hosts Leechburg Friday.

Bowling

Jordan Reges led Butler's boys to a 7-0 win over Freeport by rolling games of 236, 245 and 246 for a 727 series. Shawn Marcellus added a 639 series and 247 high game.

The Golden Tornado girls also defeated Freeport 7-0 as Abby Kyle had a 571 series and 214 game. Nicole Nebel added a 537 series and 195 game.

Butler faces Seneca Valley Wednesday at Mars Lanes.

Private Schools

Aaron Drake scored 23 points — including his 1,000th — and had six assists, but First Baptist Christian dropped a 52-51 decision to Plants and Pilars in boys basketball.

Ryan Creaturo had 21 points and Ben Drake 14 rebounds for FBC.

In an earlier game, FBC defeated Western Pa. School of the Deaf 87-57 as Derek Butterworth scored 29 points. Aaron Drake had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, Ben Drake 19 rebounds.
