Rockets' rally nips Keystone

Nick Wherthey sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime Monday night as Slippery Rock rallied for a 46-45 boys basketball win over Keystone.

The Rockets trailed by nine with 4:45 left in regulation before tying the contest. Keystone missed a last-second shot at the end of overtime.

Wherthey paced Slippery Rock with 12 points. Logan Croll and Mitch Houston scored nine each.

Dalton Jones led Keystone with 14.

Moniteau 49, Commodore Perry 28 — Jared Lominski scored 17 points as the Warriors rolled.

Girls Basketball

Anna Kadlubek scored 26 points and Macy McCall added 21 as Slippery Rock beat Girard, 70-64 in overtime, for a region win.

Hailey Raabe added nine points and Emma McDermott eight for the Rockets, who improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 65, Burrell 26 —Butler resident and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic sophomore Kylee Lewandowski scored 18 points to lead the Trojanettes.

Tess Myers added 15 points for CWNC (4-0) while Bell O'Hara had 14 rebounds. Kaylen Sharrow scored 12 points for Burrell.

Knoch 43, Deer Lakes 38 — The Knights led by one point after three quarters, but held off the Lancers in a tight game for their first victory.

Casey Kretzer scored 15 points for Knoch with Emily Fraser adding 14. Abby Buchel scored eight points for Deer Lakes.

Freeport 76, Highlands 32 — Madeline Clark netted 20 points as the Yellowjackets (3-2) rolled to their third straight win in their section opener.

Jenna Manke netted 16 points and Sidney Shemanski added 12. Renee Cebula scored 17 and Sarah Sawhook 10 for Highlands.

A-C Valley 56, Brockway 41 — Ellie Thompson scored 26 points for the Falcons while Kylie Eaton added 13. Leann Lindermuth netted 23 for Brockway.

Hockey

Trevor Gilliland had two goals and an assist, but Butler (5-6) dropped a 6-5 decision to Mt. Lebanon at the Ice Connection.

Gavin Morrison, Adam Holt and Ronan Miller added goals for the Golden Tornado. Nick Farmerie made 24 saves in a losing cause.

Thomas Jefferson 9, Freeport 1 — The Yellowjackets slipped to 2-10 on the year as Connor Hoffman scored their lone goal. Morgan Penn made 55 saves for Freeport, which was out-shot 64-13.

Thomas Jefferson improved to 10-2 on the year.

Swimming

Emma Plank won the 100-yard butterfly and participated on three winning relay teams as Slippery Rock's girls defeated Oil City 93-77.

Taylor Shanor won the 100 backstroke and was on two of the winning relays.

The Rocket boys lost 103-52 to Oil City despite Trent Donaldson winning the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
