Woman injured in Route 8 crash

Firefighters work Friday to get the roof off a wrecked SUV along Route 8 in Penn Township.

PENN TWP — A woman was taken to Allegheny General Hospital with injuries she suffered after she swerved her vehicle to avoid a stopped vehicle on Route 8 and traveled into a culvert where her vehicle flipped onto the driver's side, trapping her inside Friday afternoon.

The woman was talking and coherent while Penn Township firefighters used power tools to remove part of the roof of the Honda Pilot she was driving to get her out of the vehicle, said Middlesex Township Police Officer Randall Davison.

He said the woman told him she was driving in the left northbound lane when a vehicle stopped in front of her to turn left on to Penn Drive. Her name was not immediately available.

She swerved to avoid the vehicle, lost control of her SUV, hit a rock in front of Hunter Idealease and continued into a culvert in front of Furniture Galleries Carpet One before her vehicle flipped on its driver's side, Davison said.

He said he was dispatched at 2:21 p.m. Firefighters freed her from the wreckage just before 4 p.m.

Davison said the woman passed a state police vehicle, which was in the right lane, just before the accident took place and the trooper witnessed the incident.

He said the vehicle that stopped in front of the woman did not use the turning lane to turn onto Penn Drive and the driver left before police arrived.

A tow-truck driver from Mike's Towing Service attached a cable from his truck to the undercarriage of the woman's vehicle to stabilize it while firefighters worked to extricate her.

She was transported by Butler Ambulance Service.
