'Roebling's Bridge' to premier

Producer, actors to attend event

SAXONBURG — Cooper Hall will be transformed into a theater Saturday.

The hall will be the venue for a film premiere of “Roebling's Bridge,” which depicts the Roebling family during the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The film will play after a 5 p.m. reception. Tickets are limited, but will be available for purchase through Friday at the South Butler Community Library.

An estimated 120 people will be attending, according to Fred Caesar, Saxonburg Museum curator and Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau board member.

Caesar said he found the film randomly on the internet through its website.

“When the producer, Mark Friedman, agreed to come with the director and actors to where the Roebling legacy started, I was thrilled to say that we will make it happen,” Caesar said.

Friedman said premiering in Saxonburg made sense, and it felt right.

“I couldn't think of a humbler way to premiere our film than to go to where it all started for the Roeblings — Saxonburg, Pennsylvania,” he said.

John Roebling and his brother, Carl, founded Saxonburg in 1832. John Roebling later revolutionized bridge building through his patented wire-rope and his architectural designs.

The film runs about 20 minutes. Set in the 1800s after an accident leaves John Roebling injured as construction on the Brooklyn Bridge begins, the film focuses on the relationship between John Roebling and his son, Washington, who takes over work on the bridge.

Caesar said the performances were well done, especially that of Jeffrey Grover, who plays John Roebling.

“He's really researched the part, and he's done a really good job,” Caesar said.

Caesar said Friedman, director Christopher Carson and actors will also attend the premiere, and there will be a question-and-answer panel after the film.

He said an anonymous donor even allocated a block of tickets to Knoch High School students with interests in history or drama.

“I think it's a grand opportunity to talk to people you otherwise wouldn't,” Caesar said.

He said the event also will serve as a good capstone for the museum's recent commemorative efforts this year.

“What a fantastic way to end our year of celebrating the 185th anniversary of the founding of Saxonburg by John Roebling with a premiere of a short film about the Roebling family,” Caesar said.
