Winter hits Butler County early

Area wakes up Thursday morning under a fresh coat of snow

Check your calendars. Winter is still one week away.

Someone apparently forgot to tell Mother Nature.

Butler County residents woke up Thursday morning under a blanket of fresh snow that caused numerous traffic accidents, stuck vehicles, downed wires, and school closures and delays.

“There are wrecks all over the county,” said one dispatcher at the Butler County Communications Center just after 6 a.m. “It's getting busy now with people heading to work.”

Most of the crashes were of the fender-bender and spin-out varieties with no injuries reported.

State police and emergency crews responded to a pair of accidents on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township. The first one came in at 5:30 a.m. The second one followed about 45 minutes later.

Information about those accidents was not immediately available.

At 5:10 p.m., an advisory was issued for “road stoppage conditions” on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Tow trucks also were kept busy with calls for vehicles — primarily heavy trucks — stuck on hills.

All county school districts closed except South Butler School District followed a two-hour delay with modified kindergarten for classes Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service and weather observers, between 4 and 6 inches of snow fell on Butler County. The farther north, the more accumulation.

Snowfall measured 5 inches at Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport.

While the weather service had predicted the snow storm, its severity came as somewhat a surprise.

“There was more moist air than what we were predicting,” said Lee Hendricks, a NWS meteorologist. “Then when the cold front with this system passed through, it was readily apparent on radar.”

The system moved through Butler County about 2 a.m., providing most of the snowfall.

“The system moved very fast,” Hendricks said, “which turned out to be a good thing.”

By 7 a.m., the system was reported over much of New Jersey.

There is a 50 percent chance of snow showers Friday.

But the good news, Hendricks said, is the weekend warm-up.

“On Saturday, we're looking at the mid-30s,” he said, “and on Sunday, the low-40s.”

A mix of rain and snow showers is forecast for Sunday night into Monday morning.

A white Christmas? Too early to tell, he said.

A possible storm system next weekend could bring some snow, but on Dec. 25, the prediction for now is a 40 percent chance of a snow and rain mix.
