And they call it Fluffy Love

Launa Skiles, a Freeport Middle School sixth-grader, organized the second annual Fluffy Love program, which is ongoing at Freeport High School until Friday.

BUFFALO TWP — Those looking to get rid of their old sheets, towels, pillowcases or blankets can donate to the second annual Fluffy Love event at Freeport High School.

The bedding items, along with paper towels and any other pet supplies or food, will be split between the Butler County Humane Society and the Armstrong County Humane Society, said Cindy Skiles of Cowansville, Armstrong County.

Skiles explained that she and her husband, Ray, encourage their two granddaughters to participate twice per year in community service projects in an effort to teach them the importance of giving.

“We have to instill it now, because they're our future,” Skiles said.

So granddaughters Launa Skiles, a sixth-grade student at Freeport Elementary School, and Eva Lumley, a student at Penn Christian Academy in Penn Township, decided last year to start an annual collection for animals that must spend Christmas in a shelter.

“Not all animals get to have a home,” said Launa. “If you give them stuff it's like giving them a Christmas.”

Launa coordinated the Freeport effort, arranging for the collection to be held at the high school, all on her own, Skiles said.

Skiles said last year's inaugural event was a huge success, collecting dog food, leashes and pet toys in addition to the bedding items.

So far in this year's effort, the Skiles have noticed five dog beds, a dog coat and a pair of nail clippers among the about 140 items already in the collection bins.

Items can be dropped off at the Freeport High School's main office during school hours until Dec. 15.

Eva's end of the collection is limited to her classroom at Penn Christian Academy, Skiles said.

Last year's Fluffy Love saw 200 items donated to the two humane societies.

Launa encourages everyone to bring a bedding item, roll of paper towels or other pet supplies to the high school.

“It will help lots of animals who don't have any home,” she said.

Launa said she enjoys pursuing community service projects with her cousin and grandparents each year.

“They care about the community and the animals,” Skiles said of her granddaughters. “Grandma and Grandpa are very proud of them.”
