Slippery Rock golfer comes up aces

81-year-old Porter gets 2 holes-in-one on same golf course, only 2 days apart

SLIPPERY ROCK — Mack Porter retired as a Slippery Rock University professor 21 years ago.

His golf game remains in full swing.

Porter, 81, of Slippery Rock shot two holes-in-one in the same week recently at Green Meadows Golf Course in Volant. He used a 6-iron both times.

Porter's first ace occurred Nov. 29 on the 105-yard No. 6 hole. His second one was Dec. 1 on the 119-yard No. 9 hole.

“Most people play golf their entire lives and don't get a hole-in-one,” Green Meadows manager Martin Gardner said. “To shoot two of them in the same week is crazy.

“I've been involved in golf here for years and have never seen anything close to this.”

Porter, a member at Green Meadows, has been playing golf since he was 14. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. He did shoot a hole in-one more than 10 years ago at Spring Valley in Mercer County.

“I didn't see that one go in and I didn't see the one go in Wednesday (Nov. 29),” Porter said. “I'm just a short, chubby guy. I'm too small to see over the green.”

Porter is part of a group of golfers who hit the course “whenever the weather is decent,” he said.

“There might be as many as 30 of us out there, or maybe four to eight,” Porter added. “But we play quite often.”

George Flynn of Slippery Rock organizes the group, which plays as often as five times a week.

“Mack still brings a pretty good game,” Flynn said. “He can catch a drive and send it 180 to 200 yards.”

On his two aces, he just sent it toward the hole.

“That No. 6 hole is uphill and I just try to put the ball near the lip of the green,” Porter said. “This one happened to land in front and caromed up on to the green. It just rolled in. But I didn't see it.

“The No. 9 hole carries over water with the green on the other side. I was able to watch that one go in ... same thing, it just hit the green and rolled in.

“It's just dumb luck. No big deal,” Porter added.

Maybe not to him. Gardner raved about the accomplishment.

“Sure, he plays a lot of golf, but the pros play four times a week and you don't see them knocking in holes-in-one ... especially two in one week,” Gardner said.

“This is one for Ripley's Believe It or Not.”

Porter said he got into golf as a youngster “by collecting used golf balls with my buddies until we had enough to play.

“We put together a bunch of old golf clubs and played when we could.”

He moved to Slippery Rock in 1969 to begin a 27-year career as a professor at SRU.

And he's never quit playing golf.

“I only play nine holes or so when the weather's OK,” he said. “If the golf course is open, we're out there.”
