Vote to reopen Summit Elementary set for Monday

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board will vote at its 7:30 p.m. Monday meeting in the Harriger Education Services Center on changes to the school calendar to accommodate students returning to the Summit Township Elementary School.

The Summit pupils have been attending Broad Street Elementary School in Butler since last February while the district worked on correcting water issues at the Summit school.

The proposed schedule, which board members said they supported Monday night, will include having the Summit students spend Dec. 21 at the Butler Intermediate High School. Summit students would be off Dec. 22 and Jan. 2, which are school days for the rest of the district. They would return to Summit Elementary Jan. 3.

To make up for the two missed days, Summit students would go to school Jan. 22 and Feb. 16, which are in-service days for students in the rest of the district.

The district is continuing to do water tests at Summit Elementary and maintenance staff have painted the hallways and stripped away some old carpeting while the building has been shuttered, Superintendent Brian White said Monday.
