Scoring with a purpose

Seton Hill junior forward Emily LoPresti (32), a Karns City graduate, has been named D2CCA All-Atlantic Region first team in women's soccer this season. LoPresti led the Griffins with 16 goals and 35 points this year.

GREENSBURG — Scoring goals has never been a problem for Emily LoPresti.

It's the timeliness of them that's been impressive.

The Karns City graduate and Seton Hill University junior women's soccer forward found the net more than 200 times while playing for the Gremlins, PA Crew Academy and Northern United during her high school years.

“All I was hoping to do once I got here (Seton Hill) was crack the lineup and play,” LoPresti said.

She's done much more.

LoPresti has been the Griffins' leading scorer in each of her first three seasons. And of the 26 wins Seton Hill has accumulated during her tenure, she's gotten the game-winning goal in 14 of them.

“I never knew that ... Just lucky, I guess,” LoPresti said of the frequent game-winners.

Her coach disagrees.

“Emily knows how to step up in key situations,” Seton Hill coach Andy McNab said. “She is aggressive to the ball, rarely gets frustrated and works for quality chances.

“When she sets her mind to doing something, she does it.”

LoPresti scored nine goals and 22 points her freshman season at Seton Hill. The first goal of her collegiate career was a game-winner against Pitt-Johnstown.

She netted nine goals and 19 points her sophomore season.

“My goal this year was to reach double-digits in goals after being stuck on nine for two years,” LoPresti said.

Mission accomplished.

LoPresti exploded with 16 goals and 35 points this season. The second leading goal scorer on the team, Kate Kimmich, had six goals.

LoPresti's nine game-winning goals this season led the PSAC and she finished the regular season No. 2 in all of NCAA Division II in game-winning tallies this fall.

“There is more room for improvement and I know Emily is excited about what she can do her senior year,” McNab said. “I love the fact she always wants to finish, but she can pass the ball more often and add more assists to her game.

“She is a driven player. She sets goals and reaches them.”

Besides scoring goals in double digits, LoPresti also wanted to become a first team All-PSAC selection this year. She earned second team honors last year.

LoPresti also became the Griffins' first women's soccer player to earn All-Atlantic Region honors since the program joined the PSAC nine years ago. The all-region honor makes her eligible to become an All-American.

“Believe me, I'm surprised over what's happened so far,” LoPresti said of her collegiate soccer career. “I never thought I'd score this many goals or be an all-conference player.

“But as it happens, I have to keep shooting high. Next year I'd like to score 20 goals and be named conference player of the year. I'd be surprised if I got it, but that's the goal.”

McNab wouldn't be so surprised.

“She was a contender for Player of the Year this year,” the coach said. “Emily is one of the top players in this conference. She was in the running for that award.”

LoPresti said playing with the same group of forwards and midfielders up front the past couple of years has made a positive difference in her play.

“We know each other, they know where I like the ball ... There's definitely a comfort zone there,” she said.

LoPresti is carrying a 3.5 grade point average as an exercise science major and plans on attending graduate school in physical therapy once she graduates.

“It's crazy, what's been going on,” she said. “My experience here has far exceeded my expectations.”

“Emily LoPresti puts in a lot of hard work on her game,” McNab said. “She does it during the off-season as well. It shows on the field.

“She's a pleasure to coach and a great person to be around.”
